Young People as Changemakers: Y-EDCO Promotes Community Action for Clean Water Initiatives

Young people play a central role in protecting rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans from plastic pollution. Through its educational resources and upcoming activities, Y-EDCO encourages youth to become active changemakers in their communities.

One of the project’s learning modules focuses on community engagement and clean water initiatives. It introduces young people to practical ways of taking action, including organizing clean-up events, awareness campaigns, workshops, social media challenges, and partnerships with schools, NGOs, local authorities, and businesses.

Community action is important because plastic pollution is not only a global problem; it is also visible at local level. Riverbanks, beaches, parks, and neighbourhoods can all become spaces where young people identify problems, mobilize volunteers, and inspire others to adopt more responsible habits.

The Y-EDCO approach highlights that local action can create wider impact. A clean-up activity, for example, can become more than a one-day event when participants measure results, share findings, thank volunteers, and plan regular follow-up actions.

The project also promotes youth leadership, encouraging participants to document their actions, communicate their results, and become ambassadors for cleaner waterways. This supports the broader Y-EDCO aim of fostering active citizenship and strengthening young people’s ability to contribute to environmental sustainability.

By providing practical tools and inspiring examples, Y-EDCO helps young people move from awareness to action – and from action to long-term community change.
