Microplastics are one of the most complex and urgent parts of the wider plastic pollution challenge. They are small, often difficult to detect, and capable of spreading through water, soil, air, and living organisms. This is why the Y-EDCO learning materials place strong emphasis on helping young people understand what microplastics are, how they form, and why they matter.
The project’s educational content explains the difference between primary and secondary microplastics, the ways plastics break down, and how these particles can move through ecosystems and food webs. These are not abstract concepts — they are key to understanding how pollution continues even after visible waste disappears.
Through Y-EDCO, learners are encouraged to explore not only the science of microplastics, but also the importance of prevention, awareness, and more responsible habits in everyday life.
